Halloween

The Origins of Halloween

Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in).

The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death.

On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.

By the 600s, the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands. In the seventh century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1 All Saints' Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs.

Vacation, holiday or holidays???

You use holiday (or holidays) in BrE and vacation in NAmE to describe the regular periods of time when you are not at work or school, or time that you spend travelling or resting away from home:
I get four weeks’ holiday / vacation a year.
He’s on holiday / vacation this week.
I like to take my holiday / vacation in the winter.
The summer holidays / vacation.

In NAmE a holiday (or a public holiday) is a single day when government offices, schools, banks and businesses are closed: The school will be closed Monday because it’s a holiday. This is called a bank holiday in BrE.

The holidays is used in NAmE to refer to the time in late December and early January that includes Christmas, Hanukkah and the New Year.

Vacation in BrE is used mainly to mean one of the periods when universities are officially closed for the students.

Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush - Don't Give Up

My choice by Célia Fontoura

Peter Brian Gabriel (born 13 February 1950, in Chobham, Surrey, England) is an English musician. He first came to fame as the lead vocalist and flautist of the progressive rock group Genesis. After leaving Genesis, Gabriel went on to a successful solo career. More recently he has focused on producing and promoting world music and pioneering digital distribution methods for music. He has also been involved in various humanitarian efforts. http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Gabriel

Kate Bush (born 30 July 1958) is an English singer, songwriter, musician, and record producer. Her eclectic musical style and idiosyncratic lyrics have made her one of England's most successful solo female performers of the past 30 years. Bush was signed by EMI at the age of 16 after being recommended by Pink Floyd's David Gilmour. In 1978, aged 19, she topped the UK charts for four weeks with her début song "Wuthering Heights", becoming the first woman to have a UK number one with a self-written song. At the 1986 Bush and Peter Gabriel had a UK top ten hit with Don't Give Up", and EMI released her "greatest hits" album .http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kate_Bush

I chose this music because it is always good to remember old musics. The music has good lyrics, so listen this song.

My turtle by Catarina Vasques

This is my turtle, her name is Trisps .
I don’t know when she was born, but she lived in my house seven years. She grew very well because she lived in an aquarium with hot water. She liked to eat ham and shrimp. She also liked to walk on the floor. She died in 2003 in the aquarium because she turned around and she died drowned.
This is the life story of my turtle.

Writer of the Month - J. K. Rowling

Whether you are fan or not of Harry Potter’s adventures, you have to agree that they became a phenomenon: the books, the movies, the games… Not only are the stories well written, but they also enthusiasm people to read and now, in the UK, reading The Philosopher’s Stone will be compulsory for A-level English students, like Eça de Queirós or Fernando Pessoa is for Portuguese students.
